With barely over a week left on Commissioner Luis A. Aguilar’s tenure with the Securities and Exchange Commission (“SEC”), he summarized the changes he witnessed in the SEC during his seven years serving as Commissioner in his public statement ” Commissioner Aguilar: Looking Back at The SEC’s Transformation (and a few other things).”
In his statement, Commissioner Aguilar goes into more detail about each of the following changes, including:
- Designed a plethora of new Divisions and Offices
- Restructuring of the Enforcement Division including new Enforcement groups
- Division of Corporation Finance creating two new offices
- Creation of offices to help with the SEC’s collection and analysis of data
- Invention of new positions including Chief Compliance Officer, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Information Security Officer
- Carried out a number of initiatives to better protect investors
- Organized the Equity Market Structure Advisory Committee
- Launched the Market Structure Data and Analysis website
- Founded the Advisory Committee on Small and Emerging Companies
- Unveiled a website to track the SEC’s progress on rulemakings
- Established programs to improve data analysis capabilities
Commissioner Aguilar closes out his article by discussing some “unfinished business” he’d like to see addressed in the next year as well as some facts about his time as Commissioner. Much like Commissioner Aguilar has done with the SEC, the end of year is an optimal time to review your own firm’s policies and procedures.
